Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add my first fill-up?
Tap the Add tab (center + icon) at the bottom of the screen. Fill in the odometer, gallons, cost per gallon, and total. You can also use the AI scan buttons to photograph a pump display, receipt, or dashboard and have the numbers filled in automatically. Tap Save when done.
What AI services does the app support?
The app supports Google Gemini (free tier available, recommended), OpenAI (GPT-4 Vision), ChatGPT, Copilot, and Ollama for local/self-hosted AI. You provide your own API keys for cloud services. You can get a free Gemini API key from Google AI Studio.
How does CarPlay work?
Gas Tracker has a CarPlay interface with Dashboard, Fill Up, and History tabs. When you start a fill-up, OBD reads your fuel level and odometer. After pumping, scan the pump on your phone. CarPlay auto-saves the entry. The whole process takes about 3 taps.
What OBD-II adapters are supported?
Gas Tracker supports OBDLink MX+ (Bluetooth Classic, MFi certified) and generic BLE ELM327 adapters (Veepeak, Vgate, etc.). OBD reads odometer, fuel level, coolant temperature, and VIN. The OBDLink MX+ must be paired in iOS Settings > Bluetooth first.
Is my data stored in the cloud?
No. All fill-up records, vehicle profiles, photos, and settings are stored locally on your device. Nothing is sent to Goldlink servers. AI photo scanning sends photos directly to your chosen AI provider — Goldlink never sees them.
Can I track services other than gas?
Yes! Gas Tracker has 18 service types including oil changes, tire rotations, brakes, battery, alignment, inspections, car wash, and more. You can even select multiple service types per entry.
How does the Apple Watch app work?
The Watch app provides step-by-step guided input: price per gallon, gallons, total, then odometer. Each step shows color-coded status. When complete, data sends to your phone and auto-saves.
What is a partial fill-up?
If you don't fill your tank completely, mark the fill-up as "Partial." Partial fill-ups are excluded from MPG calculations since they would give inaccurate results. The next full fill-up will calculate MPG correctly using the accumulated miles.
How is MPG calculated?
MPG is calculated as: trip miles divided by gallons. The trip is the difference between the current and previous odometer readings. Partial fill-ups are excluded. The Dashboard shows your running average and per-fill-up MPG in charts.
How do I set up AI photo scanning?
Go to Settings > AI Settings. Choose your provider (Gemini recommended — it's free). Enter your API key. For Gemini, tap "Get Free Gemini Key" to go to Google AI Studio. Once set up, the AI scan buttons on the Add screen will work.
Does it work on iPad?
Yes. Gas Tracker runs on both iPhone and iPad with iOS 15.0 or later. The iPad version has the same full feature set as iPhone.
Camera not working?
Go to your iPhone/iPad Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera, and make sure Gas Tracker is enabled. If you see a permissions popup in the app, tap "Allow".
OBD-II not connecting?
Make sure the adapter is plugged in and the car is running. For OBDLink MX+, pair it in iOS Settings > Bluetooth first. For BLE adapters, make sure Bluetooth is on. The fuel level PID can be intermittent on some vehicles — the engine may need to be running (not just accessory mode).
